The ceramic mural is a very special place alongside Lake.

The structure includes an amphitheatre, viewing platform and two sets of sound pipes (Thongaphones). Tuned to a pentatonic scale, they are played with a thong.

The mural project started as a community arts project in 1983 under the auspices of Forum (now The Centre). Funding from the Australia Council Community Arts Board saw the appointment of Judy Lorraine as Artist-in-Residence. Further funding from the Commonwealth Government in 1985 enabled a workshop to be set up at the Benalla Aerodrome.

In 1988, a grant from the Australian Bicentennial Authority enabled the appointment of noted Australian ceramic artists to complete the "cave seats" in the colonnade.

Benalla Art Gallery
The Benalla Art Gallery, managed by Benalla Rural City Council, is one of the State's leading regional galleries and boasts over 80,000 visitors per year.

The striking modernist building was designed by Munro and Sargeant and constructed in 1975 with funding from the State Government, Benalla Rural City and local businessman, Laurie Ledger who was also a major benefactor. Renovations include improved exhibition galleries, a cafe, bookshop and deck, all designed to provide a blended experience of Australian culture, landscape and lifestyle.

A table on the deck with its exceptional setting overlooking magnificent Lake Benalla is a must do.

The cafe is open from 10am to 4pm except Tuesdays.

The Gallery is open from 10am to 5pm except Tuesdays.

Benalla Performing Arts and Convention Centre
Designed by CS&T/Ray White Architects, this $4million, 300 seat, multi-purpose performing arts centre opened in August 2004.

The project is jointly funded and managed by the Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE and Benalla Rural City.

The centre enhances the cultural lifestyle of the community by providing programs of cultural excellence as well as showcasing and encouraging local artists. The facility will also double as a conference centre and hosted its first hugely successful Conference in October 2004, the Benalla Botanica Gardening Conference.
