Guidelines for private drinking water supplies at commercial and community facilities
 Your Private Drinking Water Supply
A guide for completing a water supply management plan for schools using private drinking water supplies

Guidelines for private drinking water supplies at commercial and community facilities
All businesses and community groups that rely on a private water supply for drinking (potable) water must take all reasonable precautions to ensure the water is safe for human consumption. Private water supplies – including water pumped from rivers, creeks, bores, dams and rainwater tanks – can contain a wide range of disease-causing microorganisms and harmful chemicals if the water is not treated correctly.

The following guidelines provide information to assist food and accommodation businesses to ensure that their water supply is safe for food preparation and human consumption.

Your Private Drinking Water Supply
Private drinking water supplies, such as rainwater, are generally reliable and safe for drinking, but water quality can be variable. Outbreaks of gastroenteritis have occurred in Victoria as a result of people drinking contaminated water. You can minimise risks and keep your water supply system safe if you:

* make sure your drinking water comes from a good quality source
* regularly maintain your water supply system
* where required use the right treatment steps

‘Your private drinking water supply’ booklet has been developed to provide simple information to help keep private domestic drinking water supplies safe and healthy.

A guide for completing a water supply management plan for schools using private drinking water supplies
This guide is designed to assist schools without access to reticulated water to manage their private drinking water supplies. A preventive risk management approach is used in the development of a water supply management plan to help schools identify any hazards and address potential risks to their water supply system.

Private Water Sources Affected by Bushfires
If you live in a bushfire-affected area, you should be aware that your water source could become contaminated from debris, ash or small dead animals. If the water tastes, looks or smells unusual, do not drink it or give it to animals. If the water in your tank has not been contaminated, the water should be safe to use. Only clean the ash and debris from your roof and gutters when it is safe to do so. It shouldn't be necessary to clean your tank after a fire unless it is grossly polluted. If you wish to clean your tank, use a specialist contractor. If you have any concerns about drinking water or need help accessing fresh water supplies, contact Environmental Health on 5760 2678.
