Asbestos
The ill-prepared removal and illegal dumping of asbestos waste from renovations poses a significant public health challenge for communites and governments.

Domestic asbestos is accepted at the Benalla Landfill. There will be an asbestos limit of 500kg per customer and only from domestic sources and to be arranged into 20kg-30kg lots. Pieces in those packs need to be 1m x 1m in size. These packs need to be double wrapped in black plastic and taped up with asbestos clearly labeled on the outside.

Please call the Benalla Landfill, on (03) 5760 2600, 24 hours before disposal to make an appointment.

A website (http://www.asbestos.vic.gov.au/) recently released by WorkSafe Victoria, the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) and the Department of Health contains useful information regarding information to help homeowners, tenants, employers and workers understand the risks of asbestos, how to comply with your duties, and resources for managing and removing asbestos in homes and workplaces.

Detox Your Home - Household Chemical Collection
Do you need to safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals? Household chemicals can be dangerous – they can harm your family and your pets, add extra fuel to a house fire, release toxic fumes and pollute the environment for future generations.

Detox your Home is a safe, free and easy-to-use service to dispose of unwanted household chemicals without harming your health or the environment. The collected items are recycled for recovery and diverted from landfill.

There are 31 Detox your Home mobile collections held across Victoria each year to ensure reasonable access for all Victorian householders. The program is administered by Sustainability Victoria in partnership with local councils and is funded by the Victorian landfill levy.

Visit the Detox your Home website for a complete list of upcoming mobile collections and accepted products.

Detox your Home. Do the right thing for your loved ones and your environment. It’s easy and it’s free.

Upcoming Detox your Home mobile collections

Reduce the risk of poisoning, environmental pollution and bushfire hazards and improve recycling rates by dropping off unwanted chemicals at the Victorian Government’s FREE chemical collection service.

There are  Detox your Home mobile collections in nearby cities held each year.

If you have any questions please contact the Detox your Home info line on 1800 363 744.

Paint, batteries and fluorescent lights

From 1 July 2014, these items will no longer be accepted through Detox your Home collections and should be taken to a Victorian drop-off site, which can be accessed all throughout the year. The collected items are recycled for recovery and diverted from landfill.

The closest drop-off site is currently in Wodonga or Shepparton, however one will be opening in Wangaratta soon.

Wodonga Waste Transfer Station, 29 Kane Road  (VicRoads 653 Q5)

Shepparton Transfer Station, Wanganui Road (VicRoads 672 N2)

For more information and a full list of permanent Victorian drop-off sites visit Sustainability Victoria's website or contact Council.
