Benalla Senior Citizen’s Centre Upgrade

Local community groups will benefit from Federal Government funding in the Stronger Communities Program with an upgrade to the Benalla Senior Citizen’s Centre, to be officially opened by Mayor Cr Don Firth and Independent Member for Indi, Cathy McGowan at 3pm on Monday 13 November 2017.

The investment to the Senior Citizen’s Centre cost $58,125, with contributions from:

  • Benalla Rural City Council $20,000
  • Benalla U3A $20,000
  • Stronger Communities Program $18,125

Mayor Cr Don Firth said the centre upgrade would deliver social benefits and improve community participation.

"The Senior Citizen’s Centre is home to a number of local community groups, regular activities and local events who will all benefit from the recent renovations," Cr Firth said.

"The improved digital and physical upgrades made possible with funding from the Stronger Communities Program ensures the Senior Citizens Community Centre will continue to meet the needs of the community for many years to come."

The Senior Citizen’s Centre upgrade project commenced in March 2017 and was completed in July 2017.

Council applied for funding under the Stronger Communities Program, and managed and oversaw the project, which was also supported by Benalla U3A.

The Senior Citizen’s Centre renovation includes:

  • An upgrade to a multi-functional meeting space
  • The refurbishment of common areas
  • Upgrade of toilet facilities
  • Improved energy efficiency with the installation of LED lights
  • New blinds, carpet and the installation of a computer and TV screen
  • Resealing of auditorium floors
  • Upgrade of chairs and tables in the meeting space
  • Kitchen improvements and an instant hot / cold water tap
  • Contemporary colour scheme painted throughout
  • Relocation of the billiard table to a new purpose-built area
  • The purchase and installation of a defibrillator.

The Senior Citizen’s Centre is used by several local community groups, including:

  • Senior Citizens
  • Benalla Bridge Club
  • Benalla U3A
  • Ballroom Dancers
  • Tai Chi
