Strange Garden

Strange Garden, which is part exhibition and part participatory workshop, by artist Eliza-Jane Gilchrist is at the Benalla Art Gallery until 2 February 2020.

A visual and performance artist based in Castlemaine, Gilchrist is interested in repurposing discarded, mundane and ‘unattractive’ objects through her sculptures. She creates new sculptural forms using clothes, found objects, and as is the case in her Strange Garden installation, cardboard.

Strange Garden is an ongoing project comprising both exhibition and workshop elements where Gallery visitors contribute to the exhibition through object they make.

Benalla Art Gallery Director Eric Nash said he expected the exhibition to provide much joy over the summer holidays.

“The way Eliza-Jane is able to reimagine the most simple of materials is truly astonishing. The exhibition is a wonderful viewing experience which, I am certain, will also provide great joy to people of all ages over the summer holidays as they construct their own garden elements and make them beautiful through patterning.”

Facilitated workshops for children will be held f as part of the Gallery’s school holidays program. The workshop will lead children in creating, decorating and adding 3D organic shapes to Eliza-Janes’ Strange Garden.
