Local Government Act
In Victoria, the main legislation governing the operation of local councils is the Local Government Act 1989 (the Act).
The Act and the Regulations made under the Act provide the legal framework within which Benalla Rural City Council operates.
The Act provides the Council with general powers and responsibilities. In addition, there are 120 different pieces of Victorian legislation that councils have responsibility under as well as the Local Government Act 1989.
