The World Gliding Championships (WGC) will be held in Benalla from January 2 to 22, 2017. Hosted by the Gliding Club of Victoria, the championships will be the largest gliding event ever held in Australia, and the largest in the Southern Hemisphere with 115 competitors from 28 countries competing at the Benalla Airport over 15 days. The event consists of a series of races around courses that are set each day depending on the weather. Launching time will be from the Benalla Airport between 12pm and 2pm, as the race gets underway over the surrounding countryside. The gliders will return to land between 5.30pm and 6.30pm. The best time to see the action at the airfield will be around the launch period and in the late afternoon when the gliders return after the race. The opening ceremony for the championships will be held at 5pm on Sunday 8 January in the Benalla Botanical Gardens.
