Benalla Rural City’s Civic Precinct Revitalisation Project is progressing well with the first stage expected to be completed later this year.

Following three years of planning and funding applications, Benalla Rural City Council Mayor Cr Barbara Alexander said she wanted to bring the community up-to-date on progress of the Civic Precinct Revitalisation Project which includes the conversion of the current Civic Centre into the Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop Learning Centre.

“The final design for the Learning Centre has been agreed to by the Project Control Group established in November last year and the specifications are now waiting to go out to tender,” Cr Alexander said.

“Work specifications for the new corporate centre (council offices) in the former post office building on the corner of Bridge Street and Mair Street are currently out to tender with the compulsory acquisition process for the land being finalised in January. This process was finalised with Australia Post accepting a sworn valuation of $1.3 million from the Council in accordance with the Land Acquisition and Compensation Act legislative requirements. This has already been funded in the 2012/13 financial year through Council cash reserves and the proposed sale of 54 Arundel Street, Benalla.

“The Corporate Centre (Council Offices) is expected to be completed by September this year to enable staff to be relocated and for the Learning Centre to commence.

“The revitalisation project also includes refurbishment of the former Shire of Benalla building in Mair Street which will be the new home for the council with financial assistance being provided by Heritage Victoria.

“I congratulate and acknowledge the efforts of former Mayors, Councillors and staff in obtaining Australian and Victorian Government funding as detailed below:

Contribution Funding source
$500,000 State Government (Living Libraries Program)
$155,000 Federal Government (Regional & Local Community Infrastructure Program)

$406,000 BenallaRural City: 2011/12 – cash on term deposit

The community can also look forward to our ‘Grand Old Lady,’ the Benalla Town Hall receiving a new commercial kitchen thanks to Victorian Government funding of $300,000.

“It is really exciting to see these fantastic projects for our community moving ahead,” Cr Alexander said.
