|Dr Bill Sykes, Member for Benalla, announced today that Benalla Rural City Council will receive $110,000 for its $143,000 Local People Making Local Solutions pilot program involving a community led approach to building capacity, preparedness and resilience in four rural communities . |
Dr Sykes said the Victorian Government support was funded from the Resilient Community Program, which enables communities to take an active role in emergency management through local projects, delivering flexible and networked responses across all hazards and all agencies.
“It’s the local people who know what it takes to make their communities safer, better informed and more prepared to tackle the impact of all types of hazards," Dr Sykes said.
“Our funding will help communities to fully understand local risks, and improve their own capacity to tackle and recover from all hazards.”
Benalla Rural City Mayor Barbara Alexander said, “The grant is very timely as Benalla Rural City has encountered a number of natural disasters over recent years including flooding, drought, bushfires, frost and a tornado event.
“The Local People Making Local Solutions project will provide the opportunity to build on what we have learnt and will help us to develop stronger relationships with some of our small rural communities.”
