Community organisations are invited to apply for funds from the Benalla Rural City Council, with this year’s round of Community Grants now open. Information sessions will be held at the Molyullah Hall on Monday 3 March and the Benalla Lakeside Community Centre on Thursday 6 March. Both sessions will run between 7 to 9 pm and will include a light supper.

Applications for the grants of up to $2,500 close on Friday 28 March 2014, and Mayor Cr Barbara Alexander is urging all community organisations to consider applying for funds to help them with projects, events, or other activities that would assist the operation of their group.

“Many groups may not have even considered that they are eligible,” Cr Alexander said. “Last year, the Council distributed $50,288 to organisations as diverse as Astronomy Benalla, the Benalla Triathlon Club, the Carers and Parents Support Group, and the Baddaginnie Community.”

Cr Alexander said that if a group wasn’t sure if their project was eligible for grant funding, they should come along to one of the information sessions.

“There will also be representatives from the Tomorrow: Today Foundation, Regional Development Victoria and the Benalla Young Sportspersons Trust, to help groups work out how to access other avenues of funding as well,” she said.

One of the successful applicants through last year’s funding round was the Baddaginnie Community, which received $1,650 towards a new Adventure Playground at the Baddaginnie Primary School. Doug Williams, secretary/treasurer of Baddaginnie Community Inc. said that the grant from the Council had enabled the Baddaginnie community to respond to a request from Baddaginnie Primary School to provide much needed playground equipment. Local children have taken full advantage of this fantastic facility, showcasing the Baddaginnie School.

Council’s Community Grants Program is designed to encourage not-for-profit community-based organisations to seek funding for projects and activities that will assist in building healthy, vibrant and sustainable communities across Benalla Rural City.
