The exhibition Portraits by Albert Tucker features nine of Tucker’s most important portraits that transition through various periods of his artistic development, leaving a thread that connects a great portion of his oeuvre.

Tucker (1914 – 1999) was a major figure in the Australian modernist movement, which challenged the foundations of traditional art practice and adopted a spontaneous and visionary approach to the creative process.

He painted significant portraits of his contemporaries and loved ones, including colleagues in the Angry Penguins group or ‘Heide circle’ — Joy Hester, Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd and John Perceval.

Tucker's main inspirations include post-impressionists, expressionists and social realists, as well as personal experience.

“We are thrilled to be offering yet another stunning exhibition at Benalla Art Gallery showcasing the greats of Australian Art, following on so soon from the Fred Williams and Sam Staughton exhibitions,” said Benalla Rural City Council’s Manager Arts, Communications and Events Jilian Mulally.

“Benalla Art Gallery has a great commitment to promoting Australian art in all its permutations. Our permanent collection is one of the most important public collections of Australian art in regional Victoria, covering Australian art history right across the periods of the colonial, indigenous, impressionist, modernist and postmodernist eras,” she said.

“We are extremely grateful to Barbara Tucker for making the works available from her private collection to the Benalla Art Gallery, a number of which have not been seen publicly for many years.

“Securing exhibitions of such a high quality opens up these extraordinary works to a new audience who would otherwise not have an easy opportunity to see them.”

Entry to the exhibition, which will continue until Sunday 29 June, is free. The Benalla Art Gallery is open from 10am - 5pm except Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, and opens at 1pm on Anzac Day.
