Benalla Art Gallery was full to capacity Thursday 10 April with artists and art lovers, community members and the curious, as the inaugural Benalla Nude 2014 exhibition was formally opened.
Despite heavy rain, the opening attracted the largest crowd ever to an exhibition opening, with more than 400 attending to be the first to see the 32 works, including the winning After Image & by internationally respected artist Juan Davila.
The attendees were treated to a performance by nude artist and vocalist Bon Mott, who provided an ethereal and moving performance with music, movement and a light show.
“We knew people were looking forward to this event, and the size of the opening really confirmed it,” said Jilian Mulally, Manager Arts, Communicaitons and Events. “There is a distinct buzz around the Gallery and around the town at the moment.
“Congratulations to all the people who are involved, including all the local businesses which have joined in with activities like window displays and point of sale flags.”
Residents and visitors can pick up a map of the Windows on Benalla Nude window display walking trail in participating businesses or at the Visitor Information Centre in Mair Street, and vote on their favourite display.
Entry to Benalla Nude 2014 is $10 for adults, $5 for concession, $20 for families and Gallery members are free.
“The popularity of Benalla Nude 2014 is another way the Benalla Art Gallery can return value to Benalla,” Ms Mulally said. “It also helps offset the incredible amount of work that goes into running an event of this nature.”
Benalla Nude 2014 will run until 13 July.
Benalla Nude is being presented by the Benalla Art Gallery, which is managed by the Benalla Rural City Council. The $50,000 prize has been put forward by the Friends of the Benalla Art Gallery Inc. The Benalla Nude exhibition is supported by Tourism Victoria.
