A Family Daycare Play Group is helping pre-school children and toddlers learn to share and wait their turn while helping to cook.

The Benalla Family Day Care Play Group, part of the fun and interactive learning experiences offered by Benalla Family Day Care, is held every Thursday morning at the Ray Sweeny Community Care Centre in Coster Street. welcomes children from 18 months to 5 years.

Most recently, the Play Group held a pizza making workshop with the little cooks rolling out the pizza dough, spreading tomato paste and decorating their pizza bases with delicious toppings and grated cheese.

In the coming weeks and months children can look forward to making Anzac biscuits in the lead up to ANZAC Day, a Mother’s Day morning tea and a music session.

Several excursions are also planned with visits to the fire station, SES station, Benalla Library and a tour of the Benalla Police Station.

Lauren Soyer, whose son attends the Play Group, says that as a mother who works full-time, it is wonderful to know he is an environment where he is supported to grow and learn.

“I have found the songs, games and people he is exposed help enhance his social skills and speech,” Ms Soyer said. “Since the start of 2014 my son has been attending Playgroup sessions each week, and I see by his excitement the morning of Playgroup that he enjoys his time there.   I love that the activities he does there are not only fun but very educational.”

Benalla Rural City Council’s Manager Community Services, Deb Randich said involving children in activities like helping to cook taught them not only about healthy eating, but cooking safety, measuring and mixing skills, problem solving and following directions.

“The discussions that were generated by the children about the activity were great,” Ms Randich said.

“The children learnt about waiting, the different types of ingredients, taste testing, the importance of cooking the dough and watching the cheese melt.”

Ms Randich said the Benalla Family Day Care Play Group had been running for several years in various locations.

“This year the sessions at the Community Care Building in Coster Street allow for more involvement from the Council Co-ordination Unit and greater access to additional resources for the Educators, Care Providers and the busy mums and dads.”

The weekly Play Group sessions are open to all children and their families, Educators and Carers that are involved in Benalla Day Care and In Home Care programs.
