A large pinus radiata tree overshadowing the picnic area near the Sir Edward “Weary” Dunlop memorial was removed yesterday due to disease.
Benalla Rural City Council worked with Homewood consultancy to decide the fate of the tree.
“The tree was very old and beyond any remedial works, and has been dropping significant limbs,” said General Manager Development and Environment Veronica Schilling. “It’s always sad to see grand old trees come down, but it was a matter of public safety.”
The Council is seeking advice from Heritage Victoria about a replacement tree.
