A draft master plan for the redevelopment of the Benalla Airport is to be released for public consultation on Monday 1 September.
“This is one of the most comprehensive planning studies the Council has commissioned in its 12 years as the Rural City,” said Mayor Cr Barbara Alexander. “If adopted, it will establish the cultural, recreational, business and infrastructure potential of the site for generations.”

The Draft Benalla Airport Master Plan aims to further develop the 195 ha site on the eastern edge of Benalla to be a showcase for aviation and community activities for the next 30 years.
The draft plan was developed after receiving input from more than 200 people, with many hours of work by Council staff and consultants Ambidji Group.
Cr Alexander invited all site users, local businesses and residents to have a look at the plan and provide feedback.
“This is a large site hosting a dynamic range of activities and we are keen to make sure we have the balance of its future growth just right,” Cr Alexander said.
“This plan seeks to bring this hidden gem into the light. The World Gliding Championships in January 2017 will showcase Benalla and North East Victoria and this work is about ensuring we are ready for the world stage.
“This is a plan for the long term and will take many years to complete. The first phase will be establishing suitable facilities for the World Gliding Championships. The plan also lays out a strategy for attracting investment for further development.
“We are confident about attracting investment to develop the site, particularly since airports such as ours are identified in the State Government’s Hume Region Growth Plan as being able to play a greater role in freight and transport.”
The plan proposes the creation of eight precincts, each with a differing focus. These include runway and taxi-way improvements, cementing the site’s role as a creative space for local community groups, the preservation of the historic RAAF and migrant past, and providing a solution for local drainage needs.
