3 December: Learner Driver Mentor program goes from strength to strength  Printer Friendly

The Council announced last week that 21 local young drivers have recorded 305 hours of driving with their mentors through the L2P Driver Mentor Program since it assumed the running of the program in July.

“We have been able to train five new mentors who are now on the road helping local young drivers gain the necessary experience to get their licences,” Mayor Cr King said. “The L2P Program has also paid for 20 professional lessons, and two young drivers so far have obtained their licences.”

“This is largely due to the volunteers who are invaluable to the program, regularly offering their time to support young people in our community to gain the 120 hours required to graduate from the learner permit to a probationary licence,” said Mayor Cr Justin King, who congratulated the mentors and sponsors at a special lunch on Wednesday 26 November.

Cr King said that driving is a very important skill for young people in rural and regional areas, enabling them to access work, training and education in the absence of public transport.

“Some young people also don’t have access to adults who are able to give them the required 120 hours of training they need to get their licences,” Cr King said. “The Council is therefore very pleased to be able to support this important service to assist young people in continuing their education and getting jobs.”

The lunch was also an opportunity to recognise the major contribution by Value Autogroup who provide a vehicle for the program, as well as the sponsorship by Benalla Lions Club and the support of Victoria Police Benalla.

The Council is still recruiting both young drivers and volunteers. For more information or to sign up as a volunteer or a driver, please contact the new L2P Coordinator Charlene Ham on (03) 5760 2600.

The L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program is funded by VicRoads.
