Madama Butterfly to see opera spread wings at BPACC Benalla Opera Australia comes to Benalla with the performance of Madama Butterfly screening at the Benalla Performing Arts and Convention Centre on Sunday 1 February.
The screening is part of a global cinema event, where the modern retelling of Puccini’s tale of love and honour, performed on a floating stage on the edge of Sydney Harbour, is being screened in cinemas around the world.
BPACC Artistic Director, Matt Scholten said that Opera Australia’s Madama Butterfly has been hailed as one of the most beautiful shows of the year.
“We are so very fortunate that BPACC can be a part of this global cinema event,” Mr Scholten said. “Our digital cinema projector allows us to deliver huge international events like this. It’s really close to experiencing the event live,” he said.
Puccini’s tragic love story tells of Cho Cho San, a young Japanese girl who falls in love with an American naval officer, Pinkerton. Shortly after their wedding, Pinkerton returns to America, leaving Butterfly alone to await her husband’s return.
Set to Puccini’s familiar score, this moving story of devotion and betrayal has established Madama Butterfly as one of the worlds’ most popular operas.
The screening is the first of the 2015 program of digital theatre events, including Noel Coward’s Private Lives as performed in London’s West end screening on May 3, Opera Australia’s Carmen showing on 30 August, and a performance of Ghosts by Henrik Ibsen direct from London’s West End on 29 November.
The screening of Madama Butterfly will be performed in Italian with English subtitles and will be shown at BPACC on Sunday 1 February 2015 at 2pm.
Tickets are $13.50 for adults, $11.50 concession, and $9.50 for children.
