Farmers will have a chance to talk about how they adapt to a changing agricultural, financial and climatic landscape at the Benalla Talks Farming forum to be held at the Lakeside Community Centre in Benalla on Tuesday 24 March from 4.30-10pm.

The forum, an initiative of local farmers, with support from Ivan Lister, the Council’s Rural Outreach Worker, follows on from the success of last year’s event when more than 200 people attended.

The forum is aimed at helping farmers connect with services and resources to sustain their health as well as that of their business and family.

The forum is free to attend, with dinner provided by the Benalla Lions Club.

The forum will include discussions with industry experts from various farming sectors, financial and succession planning information, information about mental and physical health, and the opportunity to discuss with each other the challenges facing farmers today.

This year’s speakers include:

Susan Brumby, founding director of the National Centre for Farmer Health who has worked on the Sustainable Farm Families project and various research projects.
Mike Stephens, Director of Meridian Agriculture and formerly Executive Officer of the Beef Improvement Association
Alana Johnson, cattle farmer, Victorian Rural Woman of the year 2010 and founder of Australian Women in Agriculture
Richard Weston, from Centrelink’s Financial Information Services
Jan Osmotherly, Benalla Rural City Council’s Building Resilience in Communities Coordinator
Geoff Draper, Physiotherapist at Benalla Health

“I know that farmers face challenges on many fronts, and I am looking forward to hearing more about these challenges and to learn about their experiences and needs,” said Mayor Cr Justin King.

“The Council is pleased to be supporting this important project to support our farmers,” he said.

The forum has been developed in partnership with the Benalla Rural City Council, Benalla Health, the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources, with support from the Victorian Farmers Federation, the National Centre for Farmer Health in partnership with the Western District Health Service, Deakin University,  Rural Finance, Peter Davis Rural, NAB Agribusiness, the Benalla Lions Club, the Gecko Clan Landcare group, Landmark, Smyth Seeds, Rose  City Vets, and the Lakeside Community Centre, Benalla.

For further information about the forum or to register attendance, please contact the Council’s Community Development team on (03) 5760 2600. Bookings are essential to help us cater for those attending.
