Mayor Cr Justin King is conducting a tour of rural towns in 2015 as an expansion of his “open door” approach which saw him open his office to appointments with members of the public each Tuesday earlier this year.
The first leg of the tour will commence this week, with visits to Devenish, Goorambat, Goomalibee, Boweya, Warrenbayne, Tatong, Swanpool and Baddaginnie. Other councillors will also accompany the Mayor to the various locations.
“My invitation to people to make an appointment and come and see me to bring their ideas or ask questions has been embraced by the community and I see people in my office most weeks,” Cr King said.
“People in our rural towns might not always find it easy to come to town so I’m going to them, and I’m looking forward to seeing and hearing first hand what is happening in these small and vibrant communities,” he said.
Cr King said that it is important that people in the community felt that local government is accessible and transparent, and making himself available for conversations is an important part of this.
“People want their Council to communicate with them, and while we work hard to do that all the time, there is nothing that can replace a face to face conversation,” he said.
“This is especially important for people in our rural towns who may find it harder to engage with local government or feel heard.”
