Members of Benalla Rural City’s indigenous community have expressed their appreciation for the broader community’s support of recent NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) celebrations in July.

Families filled the Sir Edward “Weary” Dunlop Learning Centre for a story telling session with Aunty Kella Robinson, and a number of community members braved cold weather to witness the inaugural raising of the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags on Saturday 11 July. The flags were raised respectively by Mayor Cr Justin King, Aunty Patsy Bollard, and Sakina Babia. Children's activities at the Town Hall and a tour of the Indigenous Gardens were other highlights.

NAIDOC committee member Donna James said: "It was overwhelming to see so many children passionate about learning about Aboriginal culture from local identity Chris Thorne. My parents travelled many hours to join family members honouring this milestone for our community."

"This was a wonderful way for Benalla to acknowledge the first people and to show respect for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. I was very proud to be a part of these celebrations," said Chris Thorne, local Aboriginal artist and Benalla Rural City Citizen of the Year 2015.

The activity was part of the 2015 NAIDOC week celebrations (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) Week.

Mayor Cr Justin King said that NAIDOC week was an important event in the Council’s calendar.

“This event, which grows each year, demonstrates Benalla's commitment to a united and strong community,” Cr King said.

Plans are under way to prepare for next year's NAIDOC week celebrations. If you would like to be involved in helping to organise this and other similar activities throughout the year please contact either Chris Thorne on 0417438445 or the Council’s Manager Community Development Jane Archbold on (03) 5760 2600.
