Another forum to discuss the future of Benalla’s livestock saleyards will be held on Tuesday 25 August 2015 at the Benalla Performing Arts and Convention Centre (BPACC) commencing at 6.30pm.
The forum follows on from a successful event held in April, where various options for the saleyards were canvassed, including maintaining space to hold stock in emergencies, enhanced sheep store sales activity, the development of horse sales, and a farmers market.
“The general consensus from the April forum was to keep the facility open and accessible, with strong support to retain the truck wash and the ability to transfer stock from farm to carrier,” said Mayor Cr Justin King.
“People believe that the saleyards are important but they also understand the sorts of activities the modern market can support,” Cr King said.
“These public discussions allow us to identify the preferred options, put more detail around them, and put together a report which will be presented to the Council later in the year,” he said.
Livestock agents ceased selling cattle at the saleyards in 2013. It is now used for the annual sheep sale and stock transfers. Monthly horse sales have also recently commenced for a trial period of six months.
People intending to attend are requested to call the Council on (03) 5760 2600 to assist with catering and planning for the event. A light meal will be served prior to the meeting.
