Do you know a person, event or community group who has reached for the sky and deserves a nomination for an Australia Day award? The theme for Australia Day 2016 in Benalla Rural City is “The Sky’s the Limit,” and nominations for the 2016 Australia Day Awards are now open.
People can nominate an individual, community group or event that deserves recognition for their achievements.
Categories for awards are Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Group of the Year and Community Event of the Year.
Chair of the Benalla Rural City Council Australia Day Advisory Committee Cr Barbara Alexander AO is encouraging people to nominate a person, event or community group for an Australia Day Award.
“We have chosen the theme ‘The Sky’s the Limit’ in the lead up to the World Gliding Championships in 2017, and there are many people who contribute their time and expertise and reach high to create a better community from which we all benefit,” Cr Alexander said.
“You may have considered during the year that a person, event or community group deserve a nomination for an Australia Day award and here is your chance,” she said.
“The qualities of having a go, helping a mate and working together are among the foundations on which Australia has been built. Being nominated is a great honour and the awards are a way for all of us to say thank you to the people of our community who donate their time to many different causes and organisations. Our community could not achieve what it does without their outstanding efforts,” she said.
Nominators are encouraged to submit as much information as possible about nominees to assist the selection panel in making an informed decision. Past nominees who did not win a major award the previous year may also be renominated.
The awards will be presented on Tuesday 26 January 2016 at the Benalla Performing Arts and Convention Centre at 11.30pm.
Nominations close Tuesday 1 December 2015. Forms are available from www.benalla.vic.gov.au, the Customer Service Centre, and the Sir Edward “Weary” Dunlop Learning Centre.
