The Council has welcomed the inaugural Victoria Against Violence education and prevention awareness campaign announced by the Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence the Hon Fiona Richardson.

The campaign, commencing on 25 November, will run for 16 days and seeks to turn Victoria’s attention to the devastating impact that family violence has on the lives of so many. Benalla Rural City residents can join Parliament House and other Melbourne landmarks in “going orange,” wearing orange which is the colour designated for the campaign.

The Council will be issuing social media messages during the campaign to promote the message of ending family violence.

Councillors and the Chief Executive Officer will also participate in the White Ribbon Day march to be held in Benalla at 11am on Wednesday 25 November, beginning at the Ceramic Mural in Mair Street, and finishing at the Benalla Botanical Gardens with a barbecue.

The community-based initiative is timed to coincide with the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign, which begins on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November 2015 and concludes on International Human Rights Day on 10 December 2015.

“Family violence is an issue that we have been tackling in Benalla Rural City,” said Acting Mayor Cr Margaret Richards.

“The Council has supported many initiatives to tackle the issue, such as the Family Violence Forum that saw 2015 Australian of the Year Rosie Batty address people from around the region at BPACC, and the White Ribbon Day marches,” she said.

A range of events will be held across Victoria by women’s health organisations, councils and community groups to encourage further awareness, engagement and participation.

Benalla Rural City residents and groups are encouraged to visit the Victoria Against Violence online calendar for information about events taking place across the state. The calendar can be viewed at www.vic.gov.au/victoriaagainstviolence
