26 November 2015: Community to have say on Draft Wastewater Management Plan  Printer Friendly

The Council is seeking input into the Draft Domestic Wastewater Management Plan, which identifies how the community, Council and water agencies can work together to make sure what goes down our sinks, showers and toilets doesn’t cause harm to our health, environment or waterways.

The Plan has been developed in partnership with Goulburn Murray Water, North East Water, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority. It outlines how domestic wastewater will be managed over the next five years.

Input has already been provided by local plumbers, land capability assessment experts and residents through a series of online surveys and community drop in sessions at Devenish and Swanpool.

The Draft Plan sets out management actions, improved Council processes and infrastructure investment priorities for the next five years.  It includes asking North East Water to enhance its planning for future extensions to Benalla townships’ reticulated sewerage system by including it in its Strategic Investment Plan.

Improvements to the stormwater network in Devenish, Goorambat and Baddaginnie are also recommended, along with an inspection program of existing onsite wastewater systems, particularly older septic tanks, to make sure they are maintained properly and don’t pose a threat to human health.

More community information and education is supported in the Plan, along with reminders to residents to get their septic tank emptied every few years to help them ensure their system works effectively.

“We have used expert and community feedback to help identify how to respond to key issues and concerns”, said Acting Mayor Cr Margaret Richards.

“We would like community comment on the things the Council and water agencies are planning to do over the next five years to make sure our municipality can continue to grow with the infrastructure it needs,” Cr Richards said.
