The Council has called for an urgent round table discussion with Victoria Police and local health and education providers to discuss mental health services in the community.

At its meeting on Wednesday 30 March 2016, the Council decided to convene a round table discussion as soon as possible to which it will invite Victoria Police, Benalla Health, Benalla P-12 College, FCJ College, the Tomorrow Today Foundation and other relevant services.

The Council has called for a community forum to be held and will communicate the outcomes from these activities to Federal and State parliamentary representatives.

The Council will also investigate the establishment of a community-driven committee to be supported by local agencies.

“The Council and the community want to see more services and a more cohesive approach to tackling the difficult issues of mental health issues,” said Mayor Cr Justin King.

“There is a sense of urgency in the community that we need to deal with these issues before there is any more preventable suffering,” Cr King said.

“I understand that it can be devastating to experience poor mental health. The impact on family, friends and the whole community is also immense and long lasting and in some cases avoidable.

“We all need to work on this issue together. It is not up to one agency or one service to address how we deal with mental health and the factors that influence it in our community.

“The Council plays an important part in bringing people together around difficult issues like this. The youth mental health forum we held last year, the formation of the Youth Action Committee and our support for events such as RUOK Day are all important, as are the activities of Benalla Health, the schools, the Tomorrow Today Foundation and Victoria Police. Members of the community have also rallied, holding a public forum on suicide last year.

“Now is the time to come together and work together to tackle this problem. All of us need to work together to address all of the factors that influence mental health, and to advocate for adequate resources to assist people when things get difficult.
