Benalla Art Gallery welcomes $5000 donation from Moran Arts Foundation
The Benalla Art Gallery received a donation of $5000 from the Moran Arts Foundation on Saturday 2 July at the launch of the Doug Moran Portrait Prize exhibition.
Peter Moran, eldest son of Doug and Greta Moran who founded the annual portrait prize in 1988, said that the gift was to go towards an acquisition of choice of the Gallery.
“We wanted to give something special to the people of Benalla, and we thought this was a nice way to do that for the community,” he said.
Bryony Nainby, Director of the Benalla Art Gallery said that the Gallery was delighted to receive such a generous donation.
“We are already privileged to be exhibiting this important exhibition, the only Victorian venue to do so for the 2015 prize, so it was very exciting to have this donation announced at the exhibition launch,” Ms Nainby said.
The Doug Moran Portrait Prize exhibition will be on display from 2 July - 4 September. The winning entry is by Melbourne artist and first-time competitor, Warren Crossett, who took out the $150,000 prize from a field of 912 entries with his work Self portrait after St Jerome Flanders.
Previous winners of the Doug Moran Prize include Ben Quilty and Vincent Fantauzzo.
