The Benalla Youth Services Provider Network (BYSPN) would like to see at least 400 local young people aged 12-25 complete an online survey to help inform planning for initiatives to support young people, including the development of a youth hub at the Benalla Drill Hall.

The survey seeks to understand more about the issues young people are dealing with and the information gathered from this survey will help decide the best ways for BYSPN to work with the community to more effectively support young people in Benalla.

A new youth hub at the Benalla Drill hall is set to be trialled in September which will provide the opportunity for young people to connect socially, participate in a range of activities and get informal access to services and information to support their wellbeing.

The potential youth space has been proposed by the Council’s Youth Action Committee (YAC) and young people can give their opinions around mental health issues and the types of things they would like to see happen in the youth hub via the survey which can be taken here.

“The need for a dedicated youth space in Benalla came through strongly during consultations for the Council Youth Strategy 2013-17 but until now, there has not been a group of young people mobilised to help design and drive it,” said Mayor Cr Justin King.

“Recently, however, the YAC took their idea to Council and received strong support for the trial. This initiative, if also supported by the community, has the potential to grow into an important local resource which will help support the well being of our young people,” Cr King said.

“The Council and BYSPN have been very active in trying to assist the community in the area of youth wellbeing through forums held over the last three years, the RUOK Day activities last year and the establishment of the YAC, and it is very encouraging to see some more practical suggestions being developed and to see the idea being driven by local youth.

“The trial of the hub at the Drill Hall in September and the survey will be useful in determining whether there is enough widespread support for it as an ongoing activity.”

The first trial Youth Hub session is set to take place on Thursday 8 and Friday 9 September at the Drill Hall and will include a combination of activities and a “chill out” space, with the venue transformed into an “open mic” venue on the Friday night.

“Young people 12-25 from Benalla are encouraged to get involved with the planning for this trial session and musicians 35 and under are invited to register for the ‘open mic’ event by contacting the Community and Youth Development Coordinator at the Council,” Cr King said.

The Benalla Youth Service Providers Network (BYSPN) is coordinated by the Council's Community and Youth Development Coordinator.  Regular attendees  include representatives from Council, NESAY, Victoria Police, Benalla Health, GoTAFE, Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), NE Tracks LLEN, Tomorrow Today Foundation, Job Service agencies, Schools, Mental Health Services, Drug and Alcohol Counsellors, Primary Care Partnership and Women's Health Goulburn North East (WHGNE). Young people, other service providers, community members and organisations also attend from time to time.

The Community and Youth Development Coordinator Amanda Aldous can be contacted by email at council@benalla.vic.gov.au or by calling 03 5760 2600.
