22 August: Benalla Festival joins Air Force Cadets on parade at a new time for 2016  Printer Friendly

The Benalla Festival’s popular Street Parade will be held on Saturday 5 November at the new time of 3.30pm and will for the first time feature Air Force Cadets from across the Hume Region performing a Freedom of Entry ceremony.

Following consultation with local businesses the new time will assist local retailers in the morning with their business operations and will connect the crowds better with the Saturday by the Lake Entertainment program at 4.30pm, according to Chair of the Benalla Festival Advisory Committee Cr Barbara Alexander AO.

“The street has previously been held at 12.30pm. Having the parade at the earlier time restricted access to the shopping precinct and had an impact on trade,” Cr Alexander said.

The other new inclusion for the parade is the Freedom of Entry ceremony to be performed at the commencement of the parade by the Air Force Cadets, who celebrate their 75th anniversary this year. It will include a ceremonial scroll allowing entry to the town being presented to the cadets before they march down Bridge Street, leading the parade.

The parade will also include marching bands, school and community floats, dancers, historic cars and aircraft.

Cr Alexander said the Benalla Festival Advisory Committee is inviting people to express an interest in participating in the parade.

“The Street Parade is a popular and iconic event of the Festival program that celebrates our community, and provides acknowledgement of community and sporting groups, organisations, individuals and businesses,” she said.

“Join the fun of the street parade as a participant and celebrate the theme The Sky is the Limit… celebrating aviation in Benalla in the lead up to the 34th FAI 2017 World Gliding Championships. The theme also celebrates the many people who strive high to create a better community.”

Trophies will be awarded on the day for entries that capture the theme.

The parade starts at the Monash Bridge and moves down Bridge Street to the roundabout at Carrier Street (Miller’s corner) and returns along Bridge Street.

Application forms and guidelines to participate in the parade are available from www.benallafestival.com or the Customer Service Centre, 1 Bridge Street East, Benalla.

For further information, please contact Benalla Festival Advisory Committee Member and Street Parade Coordinator Di Harper on 0427 625 916.

This year’s Street Parade is proudly sponsored by Specsavers Benalla.
