Our 24 hour number is not for emergency assistance
Our Customer Service phone number is not an emergency number for people who need flood assistance or emergency information. It is a 24 hour line that can be used to report issues to on-call staff such as damage to roads, livestock on roads, or other matters. Officers will assess whether they can safely respond after hours or if the issue can wait until the next business day. Where weather conditions are unsafe a response may be delayed. Please use the numbers above for emergency assistance.

Our emergency role
During an emergency, the Council supports the emergency services such as the SES and Victoria Police in providing public information, managing road closures, sandbagging provisions and other similar support.

Victoria Police are in charge of road closures, and we assist them under their direction. We do our best to pass that information on to the public.

We cannot manage roads controlled by VicRoads as they are not our property. We provide information to VicRoads about local conditions and local road closures.

We lead in recovery
The Council is responsible for coordinating recovery after a flood. We will put people in touch with agencies who can assist, and we will coordinate recovery activities. In serious emergencies, we may set up a recovery centre.

We do our best to assess the condition of roads and drains after a flood, but we also rely on information from the public to help identify structures that may need to be repaired. Some minor works that don’t affect safety may be delayed if we have to direct our resources towards more urgent work, and in the meantime we may only be able to erect signs advising people to be careful.

For more information about how to plan for a flood or any other emergency, please visit www.ses.vic.gov.au
