13 September: Community Plan launched with 20 year future focus  Printer Friendly

The first ever long term Community Plan for Benalla Rural City was launched on Thursday 1 September 2016 at the Sir Edward “Weary” Dunlop Learning Centre.

Sixty people attended the launch for the Plan which sets the priorities for the community for the next 20 years.

“The Community Plan can be used as a reference for planning by community groups and organisations, businesses and the Council to develop strategic plans and funding submissions across all aspects of life within Benalla Rural City,” said Mayor Cr Justin King, who launched the plan.

“It is not intended to be a list of actions but a blueprint of where the community has said it would like our collective efforts to be focused, so that we can tailor our specific activities to the areas we value most.

“The Plan identifies 46 strategic directions which will guide the way forward for the Benalla Rural City community over the next 20 years. The next phase of the project will be an implementation plan which will be led by a community steering group.

“I encourage the wider community to join in this work to implement the plan and support partner organisations and groups to embrace our shared journey over the next 20 years.

“I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the development of the Community Plan, especially members of the Community Plan Project Steering Committee who have been actively meeting and driving the development of this project over the last twelve months.”

The Community Plan was developed after extensive consultation with the community, including kitchen table discussions, workshops, postcards, online engagement and open house sessions. The project has been community driven, led by eleven independent community members on the Community Plan Project Steering Committee, including men and women from rural and urban communities and a wide range of ages.

More than 700 people contributed their feedback to what sort of community they want Benalla Rural City to be.
