Organic Waste Collection Service
Benalla Rural City’s urban residents receive an organics waste service, and rural residents  have the option of larger recycling bins.

The organics service and the larger 360 litre recycling bins are designed to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

It is estimated that the introduction of the organics collection will reduce the weight in the red-lid rubbish bins by up to 50%. This is a cost saving for the community, and less organic waste will be buried to release methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

Urban waste collection
The new system provides urban residents with an organics waste collection weekly, which will be sent to a composting plant to be turned into compost.
The recycling and rubbish bins are emptied from urban residents on alternate weeks.
Households have been provided with kitchen caddies and compostable rubbish bags to help them manage their organic waste

Be a good sort: the rules for using our waste services
Being a good sort getting the right material in your recycling and organics bins. This saves us all money and protects the environment. Many people already know how to be a good sort when it comes to waste. Since July 2015 1,1436 tonnes of green waste were diverted from landfill, and the amount of recycling collected increased by 112 tonnes on the same time last year.

Contamination of waste collections has financial consequences for all our ratepayers. The Council can issue fines if the waste service is not used correctly.

From 1 July 2016 if you put the wrong material in a bin:
1st time – your bin will have a sticker put on it advising you of the incorrect material.
2nd time - a letter will be sent to the property owner advising of the contamination.
3rd time - the bin will be removed from the property for one collection cycle, and waste management charges will still apply.
4th time - the bin will be removed and not replaced until the user commits to use the bin effectively, and waste management charges will still apply.

Our advice on how to be a good sort includes:
NEVER put plastic bags in your green or yellow bin.
ONLY use the special compostable bags in your organic waste service. These are available free from the Customer Service Centre, Visitor Information Centre and Sir Edward “Weary” Dunlop Learning Centre.
If you keep your recyclables in plastic bags until bin day, tip the recyclables out of the bag into the yellow bin.   Alternately consider keeping them in a tub or box instead. Plastic shopping bags can be recycled at supermarkets.
