Although householders are legally entitled to carry out asbestos removal, it is not recommended.
According to the Occupational Health & Safety Regulations 2007 Part 4.3 Division 7 Subdivision 2, an unlicensed person may remove non-friable asbestos material if the area does not exceed 10m2 and the total time over which the removal is performed does not exceed one hour in any 7 day period.
The most common types are sheet roof cladding and wall linings. Asbestos from commercial or industrial sources can be disposed of at Bowser Landfill (contact Rural City of Wangaratta on (03) 5722 0888). The Benalla Landfill has a small domestic asbestos bin available however disposal will not be approved unless an appointment is made to discuss the origin and details of the asbestos requiring disposal. The intent of the Asbestos Disposal Bin at the Benalla Landfill & Resource Recovery Centre is to facilitate the disposal of small quantities of asbestos generated through small domestic activities.
Please contact Council on (03) 5760 2600 or email@example.com to make an appointment, please note the following information will be required to be made available:
- Address of property where asbestos was removed from
- Name & address of property owner
- Name & address of person who removed asbestos
- Name & address of person who transported asbestos
- Vehicle Registration: Vehicle Make
- Vehicle Model: Vehicle Colour
- Type of asbestos removed
- Type of building where asbestos was removed from
- Area (m2) that asbestos was removed from
- Quantity of asbestos to be disposed
There will be an asbestos limit of 100kg per customer and approval to dispose of the asbestos will remain at the total discretion of council.
Asbestos must be arranged into 20kg-30kg lots. Pieces in those packs need to be 1m x 1m in size. These packs need to be double wrapped in black plastic and taped up with asbestos clearly labeled on the outside.

| Detox Your Home - Household Chemical Collection|
|Do you need to safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals? Household chemicals can be dangerous – they can harm your family and your pets, add extra fuel to a house fire, release toxic fumes and pollute the environment for future generations. |
