To improve chances of being reunited with lost pets, Benalla Rural City pet owners are being reminded to check their details are up to date.

Following an amendment to the Domestic Animals Act (1994) in October 2022, vet clinics are now able to return stray dogs and cats to their owners without having to hand them over toCouncil.

Make sure your pet comes home quickly by updating your contact details in two key places:

1. The domestic animal microchip database

You can find your pet's microchip number on your council pet registration renewal, vaccination certificate, or by contacting your local vet.

2. Your pet's registration with Benalla Rural City Council

If you’ve moved house, changed your phone number or have a new pet – your contact details might be out of date. Be sure to update any changed details as soon as possible by contacting Council on 5760 2600.

Residents with unregistered dogs or cats, or people new to the region, can contact Council on 5760 2600 or visit benalla.vic.gov.au/pets for more information about rules related to domestic animals in Benalla Rural City.
