Construction on the much-anticipated Benalla Art Gallery Redevelopment is set to begin, with temporary fencing being set up at the Deas Street carpark by the contractor this week.
Council recently appointed Midson Construction (Vic) Pty Ltd as the construction contractor to carry out the project. Midson Construction will start work on-site in the coming week with work expected to be completed in early 2027.
This significant community project will transform the much-loved regional gallery with upgrades designed to modernise the gallery, improving accessibility and amenity for all users. A key focus will be celebrating and preserving the gallery’s iconic architecture, blending its historic design with some much-needed modern updates.
Benalla Rural City Mayor, Cr Bernie Hearn said the start of construction was a positive moment for the people of Benalla Rural City.
“We know how much our gallery means to the people of Benalla, so getting the builders on site is exciting for our community,” Cr Hearn said. “This highly anticipated redevelopment is all about making sure our gallery is easy for everyone to use and enjoy, whether you are a local family on a weekend outing or a visitor exploring our region.”
“This project is laying the groundwork for the future of arts in our Rural City,” Cr Hearn said. “By modernising the space, we are making sure it stays a vibrant, everyday hub for our community for decades to come, without losing the charm and history that makes the original building so special to us all.”
Throughout construction gallery programs and exhibitions will continue to be offered at the Pop-Up Benalla Art Gallery, at 75 Bridge Street East.
