Benalla’s new Dog Park set for Grand Opening

12 February 2026

Final works are being completed on Benalla’s highly anticipated Saleyards Road Dog Park, with construction on track for its scheduled opening. The new park will officially open to the public with a community event on Friday 13 March at 4pm.

The Benalla Saleyards Dog Park provides a dedicated, safe, and accessible space for the community’s furry friends to exercise and socialise. The project was developed in response to strong community demand for more off-leash areas in the municipality.

Key features include a fully fenced enclosure with large, all-abilities airlock entries, and a separate, dedicated section for quiet or nervous dogs, a feature specifically requested by residents during community consultation.

Mayor, Cr Bernie Hearn, said the completion of the park was a fantastic milestone for the Benalla Rural City community.

“We heard our community loud and clear – they wanted a safe, modern space for their dogs to run around and socialise,” Cr Hearn said. “It’s great to see this project finished on time and ready for the community to enjoy.”

The park’s design incorporates sensory enrichment for dogs, including raised landscaped areas with sand, dog-friendly plants, and rockeries. Compacted crushed rock paths offer level surfaces for visitors, while benches provide a place to rest. The park will also be a valuable resource for travellers on the Hume Highway, offering a convenient stop to exercise their pets.

The official opening of the new facility, featuring a community barbecue and pawsome giveaways, will be held on Friday 13 March, however residents and their four-legged companions to be able to experience the new facility sooner, once construction is completed in the coming weeks.

This project is supported by the Victorian Government through the New and Upgraded Dog Parks Program.
