During National Volunteer Week, Benalla Rural City Council shines a spotlight on the outstanding contributions of our volunteers across the entire community.
From those giving their time at the Benalla Visitor Information Centre, Benalla Art Gallery, Benalla Cinema, the Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop Learning Centre and RedB4 Book Shop, to volunteers supporting our Botanical Gardens and parks, the TAC L2P Learner Driver Program, community events and festivals, Litter Gatherers, Age Friendly Benalla and all youth programs — each group plays a vital role in making our community a better place to live.
One standout initiative is Amplify, a youth-led program for individuals aged 12–25 years. It empowers young people to organise and participate in live music events and creative projects, helping to build a vibrant and connected community.
For Max, a committed Amplify volunteer, the motivation is simple: “The feeling of volunteering makes you feel good about yourself in an unselfish way. You are doing something for free, for the greater good, and because you’re passionate about it,” he said.
Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn highlighted the value of initiatives like Amplify, saying, “Programs like Amplify not only bring energy and creativity to our community but also give young people the chance to grow, connect and make a real difference,” she said. “It’s inspiring to see their passion and dedication.”
Charlotte, also an Amplify volunteer, reflects on her journey: “When I found out all the stuff we have to do, I was like, wow, that’s a lot. Now that we have done so much, it is easy, it is fun. You feel like you actually achieved something. It feels so good.”
Amplify’s music events provide a safe and inclusive space for young people to have fun and connect with other young people, bands and artists. Jayhe‑Lee highlights the impact of these events, saying, “It is good to have these events, so our generation can get off our phones and actually go and socialise.”
Volunteering through Amplify not only enriches the lives of young people in Benalla but also strengthens the community. Max says, “The sense of community is incredible. One word that comes to my mind when I think about this is fantastic.”
Benalla Rural City Council invites young people to join the Amplify committee and be part of this positive journey. To find out more about Amplify events, follow @youthbenalla on Instagram, keep an eye out at schools, or listen out via word of mouth.
This National Volunteer Week, let’s celebrate the power of youth volunteering and encourage the next generation to make a difference. As Charlotte sums up simply, “I just feel happy after each event.”
