Celebrating National Reconciliation Week

22 May 2026

Free movie screening for National Reconciliation Week

Benalla Rural City Council is hosting a free community screening of the documentary In My Blood It Runs to mark National Reconciliation Week 2026.

The event will be held on Monday 1 June 2026 at the Benalla Cinema. It’s an opportunity for the community to come together, reflect on our shared histories, and learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

The evening will include:

6pm:        Light refreshments at the Benalla Visitor Information Centre.

6.30pm:   An Acknowledgement of Country and special introduction from Aunty Cheryl           Cooper at the Benalla Cinema, followed by the film screening.

In My Blood It Runs is a documentary that follows Dujuan, a 10-year-old Arrernte/Garrwa boy, as he navigates the challenges of growing up Aboriginal in Australia. The film explores themes of identity, education, and First Nations cultural survival.

This is a free event, but seating is limited, so bookings are essential. To reserve your spot, please contact Benalla Cinema on 03 5762 5515.

Benalla Library hosts National Reconciliation Week conversation

Benalla Rural City Council is inviting the community to be part of National Reconciliation Week at the Benalla Library on Wednesday 27 May, to reflect on reconciliation and learn more about Treaty in Victoria.

The event will begin at 5.30pm with an Acknowledgement of Country followed by Aunty Cheryl Cooper unveiling her newest piece of textile artwork. After the unveiling, there will be a discussion with two members of the newly formed Gellung Warl. Isobel Morphy-Walsh, the reserved seat holder for Taungurung Land and Waters Council, and Levi Power, general member for the North East Region, will be sharing their stories and speak about Treaty as a pathway towards reconciliation.

Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn said the event at Benalla Library is an important opportunity for the community to come together to get a better understanding of reconciliation and Treaty.

“National Reconciliation Week reminds us that understanding grows when we listen to one another,” Cr Hearn said. “Events like this help us build better understanding and stronger relationships, working together towards a more inclusive future for everyone in Benalla Rural City.”

This session invites community members to listen, learn and take part respectfully. This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, ‘All In’, encourages everyone to get involved by promoting respect, understanding and positive change.

National Reconciliation Week is an important time for communities to come together, reflect on our shared history, and take steps towards a more inclusive future.
