Community invited to free grant writing workshop this July

26 June 2026

Benalla Rural City Council is encouraging local community groups, volunteers and event organisers to take part in Secrets of Grant Success, a free, practical workshop designed to build confidence and skills in preparing successful grant applications.

Delivered by grant specialist Sandy, the workshop explores the Grantable framework she uses when applying for grants. Each session is tailored to the needs of participants and covers the grant basics, planning supporting documents, gathering evidence and developing clear, effective writing skills. Participants will also learn simple techniques and tools their group can use to plan and prepare future applications.

Council is also encouraging anyone who may have missed out on a Community Grant in the past to come along. By strengthening your understanding of what makes a strong application, this workshop can help improve your chances in future funding rounds.

Secrets of Grant Success

Time:           9.30am-midday

Date:            Thursday 16 July 2026

Location:     Benalla Lakeside Community Centre, via Arundel Street, Benalla

Booking:      https://www.benalla.vic.gov.au/event/grants/

Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn said the session is an important opportunity for community members to strengthen their projects and improve their chances of securing funding.

“We know how much time and effort goes into applying for grants,” Cr Hearn said. “Secrets of Grant Success gives people the tools and confidence they need to put forward strong, competitive applications.”

“Whether you’re applying for the first time or looking to sharpen your approach, this workshop will help you feel more prepared and supported,” she said.

Participants will leave with a hard‑copy workbook of their notes, along with practical tools to help plan and create their next application.

Community groups, businesses, not‑for‑profits and individuals are also encouraged to explore the Benalla Funding Finder, an online portal, on Council’s website, connecting users to more than 1,400 funding opportunities. The site provides a comprehensive list of grants available locally and nationally, helping people identify programs that best match their needs.

This training is made possible thanks to Benalla Rural City Council and the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DECCA) Forestry Transition Fund.

Registrations are now open. To secure your free place, visit https://www.benalla.vic.gov.au/event/grants/
