Major Festivals and Events

Benalla Festival is an annual celebration of community spirit, creativity, and local culture. Held over the two weeks surrounding Melbourne Cup Day, the festival features a diverse program of activities for all ages. From live music and markets to art displays and family-friendly events, it’s a highlight on the community calendar.

2026 Dates: 31 October to 8 November

We’re inviting community members with an interest in events, culture and community celebration to nominate to join the Committee and help guide the future of the Benalla Festival.

The much-loved Benalla Street Art Festival returns from 11–13 April 2025 after a successful 2024 event. Experience this vibrant week-long event featuring over a dozen new murals, art installations, cinema screenings, exhibitions, and public discussions. Benalla’s colourful laneways, already hosting over 80 incredible murals, will come alive with global and local talent.

Australia Day is a time to reflect on what it means to be part of the Benalla Rural City community and to celebrate the people who help make our region a welcoming, connected and inclusive place.

Each year, Council delivers a meaningful Australia Day program that brings the community together to recognise outstanding local contributions, welcome new citizens and celebrate the diversity and strength of our region.

  • Community Christmas Party  – Celebrate the festive season with the community.
  • Trails, Tastings and Tales – Discover Glenrowan’s wine region and its rich history.
  • Benalla Gold Cup – Enjoy thrilling horse racing with great food and entertainment.
  • Historic Winton – Revel in classic vehicles and the heritage of motoring.
  • Australia Day – Celebrate the people that make Benalla so wonderful

Benalla Rural City supports event organisers through funding programs designed to boost community activity and attract visitors:

  • Community Grants Program  – For smaller community-focused activities.
  • Quick Response Grants – Provides funding for eligible projects and events.
  • Major Event Funding – Open year round until funds are expended in a financial year.   This program focuses on events that provide significant economic benefits, attract visitors, and enhance local life.

Introducing the Benalla Rural City Destination Management Plan 2025–2029

The Destination Management Plan (DMP) sets the vision for growing tourism in Benalla and surrounds over the next five years. It guides how government, industry and the community work together to attract investment, strengthen our visitor experiences and deliver benefits for the local economy and community.

Informed by detailed analysis and extensive consultation, the DMP builds on our region’s strengths and aligns with broader Victorian and national tourism strategies. It establishes the foundations needed to support a capable industry, respond to emerging opportunities and drive sustainable growth.
