When Sandy Mackinnon travels, he likes to do it the slow way and the hard way. An English teacher and writer of four best-selling books, Sandy fell in love with slow travel when he travelled between Australia and the UK as a boy in the last of the great P&O liners with his family… and the bug has never left him. Inspired by Doctor Dolittle and other whimsical characters from children’s fiction, Sandy has thrice now set off on astonishing voyages. He spent a year travelling from the southernmost tip of New Zealand to Scotland without flying any of the way in search of the fabled Well of Eternal Youth on a remote Scottish island. Komodo Dragons, Laotian Princesses, swimming illegally into China at night, arrest as a potential spy, homicidal skippers and a host of delightfully dotty people met along the way characterise the travel tales Sandy has to tell.
