Managing nuisance animals helps maintain a harmonious neighbourhood. Learn how to deal with common issues such as barking dogs and wandering pets.

Barking Dogs

Excessive barking can disturb neighbours. If you’re experiencing this issue, the Council can provide advice on steps to address it. Pet owners may need to consider training or environmental changes to minimise noise. Note that under the Domestic Animals Act 1994 , owners of nuisance animals may be subject to enforcement action, such as fines or prosecution.

Wandering Pets

Cats and dogs are not allowed to wander at large and must be securely contained to the property at which they are kept under the Domestic Animals Act 1994. Wandering cats and dogs can impact local wildlife, fight or attack persons or other animals, contract disease or be injured by other animals or vehicles. Ensuring your pets are safely confined to your property at all times is the best way to keep them happy, healthy and secure.

If wandering animals create a nuisance or are involved in an incident, the owner or person in charge may commit an offence under the Domestic Animals Act 1994 and the Council’s local laws, owners of animals may be subject to enforcement action.

To report any nuisance animals including barking dogs or wandering cats and dogs, you can notify the Council online or call Customer Relations on 03 5760 2600.
