Benalla Rural City Council oversees the maintenance and upkeep of Benalla Rural City’s local roads and footpaths. While we manage local roads, arterial roads and freeways are the responsibility of VicRoads.

Our leaf pick-up service operates during heavy leaf fall periods. Contact Customer Service at 03 5760 2600 to join the collection schedule.

This program supports young learner drivers aged 16 to 21 who don’t have access to a supervising driver or vehicle. Matched with trained volunteer mentors, participants can complete the 120 hours of supervised driving needed for their probationary licence.

The ‘Pathways to the Future’ Project assessed Benalla’s foot and cycle path infrastructure to help us understand current needs and future priorities. This strategy ensures the safety and connectivity of our community.

We have 14 school crossings managed by 18 supervisors to ensure children’s safety. Remember, whenever school crossing flags are displayed, it’s illegal to stop or park within:

• 20 metres before a crossing
• 10 metres after a crossing
• 10 metres of an intersection

In Benalla Rural City Council, the road reserve refers to the strip of land between your property boundary and the edge of the roadway. If you’re planning any activity within this area, you must first obtain a Works Within a Road Reserve Permit from the Council.

This permit is required for a range of activities, including but not limited to:

• Installing or modifying vehicle crossovers
• Landscaping or altering nature strips
• Removing or replacing trees
• Setting up barricades around construction zones
• Placing skip bins or other temporary structures on the road reserve

Undertaking any of these works without prior approval may result in penalties or delays. Always check with Benalla Rural City Council to ensure your project complies with local regulations.
