Welcome to the Roads & Footpaths section of the Benalla Rural City Council website.

Here you’ll find essential information about how we manage and maintain our road network, and our efforts to improve safety and connectivity for our community.

Benalla Rural City Council oversees the maintenance and upkeep of Benalla Rural City’s local roads and footpaths. While we manage local roads, arterial roads and freeways are the responsibility of VicRoads.

If you would like information about a road that is not managed by the Council, go to the VicRoads website for maps highlighting declared and local roads.

Find comprehensive details in our Road Management Plan 2021-2025. It outlines how we maintain our network to support safety and accessibility.

If you need to temporarily close part of a road or road reserve for events like concrete pouring or community activities, a permit is required. Contact us on 03 5760 2600 for guidance.

We run a regular maintenance program to ensure our roads meet community expectations. If you have any concerns or spot an issue with a local road, call us on 03 5760 2600.

Should you see a hazardous tree or branch on the road, contact us on 03 5760 2600—available 24/7.

Our leaf pick-up service operates during heavy leaf fall periods. Contact Customer Service at 03 5760 2600 to join the collection schedule.

This program supports young learner drivers aged 16 to 21 who don’t have access to a supervising driver or vehicle. Matched with trained volunteer mentors, participants can complete the 120 hours of supervised driving needed for their probationary licence.

  • Want to become a mentor? Join our network of volunteers and help a young person become a safe and confident driver.
  • Check eligibility and learn about volunteering through the L2P Learner Driver page or contact 03 5760 2600.

The ‘Pathways to the Future’ Project assessed Benalla’s foot and cycle path infrastructure to help us understand current needs and future priorities. This strategy ensures the safety and connectivity of our community.

  • Developing Priorities: Recommendations from this project guide decisions on improving the network and securing grant funding for upcoming years.
  • Community Input: Public consultation sessions and surveys shaped this project, ensuring it reflects community expectations.

We have 14 school crossings managed by 18 supervisors to ensure children’s safety. Remember, whenever school crossing flags are displayed, it’s illegal to stop or park within:

  • 20 metres before a crossing
  • 10 metres after a crossing
  • 10 metres of an intersection

Interested in joining our team? We are currently seeking School Crossing Supervisors. Find out how you can contribute to the safety of our community by contacting 03 5760 2600.
