Social Connection Grants now open

11 May 2026

Local community groups and organisations are encouraged to apply for Benalla Rural City Council’s upcoming Social Connection Grants, opening 9am Monday 11 May 2026.

The grants aim to strengthen social ties, reduce isolation and support community‑led wellbeing across Benalla Rural City. Funding is provided in partnership with the Benalla and District Social Inclusion Action Group and the Victorian Department of Health.

This year’s program features two grant categories, offering support for both First Nations‑led initiatives and broader community projects. Together, these categories provide opportunities for community groups and organisations to deliver activities, events and programs that help people feel more connected and supported.

Social Connections Grants

Two tiers of Social Connections Grants are available to support a wide range of community‑led activities and initiatives.

Tier 1: Digital Support Grants – Up to $1,000

This tier supports community groups who face barriers to accessing digital technology. Funding can help groups with limited, outdated or no access to appropriate technology so they can stay connected and engage with their members.

Eligible expenses may include:

  • updated laptops or desktop computers
  • software or digital platforms such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Teams or Zoom
  • digital equipment needed to run or coordinate activities
  • other reasonable digital-access costs that support community engagement.

Tier 2: Community Activity & Event Grants – Up to $5,000

This tier supports community projects, events and activities that bring people together and encourage social connection.

Eligible expenses may include:

  • catering
  • entertainment such as bands or face painters
  • venue or equipment hire
  • subsidised use of Council facilities
  • guest speakers or facilitators
  • printing or promotional costs
  • decorations
  • resources for activities.

First Nations Social Connection Grants – Up to $5,000

First Nations Social Connection Grants support projects, events or activities that build connection, inclusion and belonging for First Nations communities. These grants are open to local community groups and organisations, particularly (but not limited to) those led by or working closely with First Nations people.

Funding can support initiatives that:

  • create culturally safe opportunities for people to come together
  • strengthen trust, social ties and community-led wellbeing
  • support connection in ways that are respectful, inclusive and community-driven.

Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn said these grants play an important role in supporting community‑led ideas.

“These grants help people come together in ways that feel safe, welcoming and meaningful,” Cr Hearn said. “It’s about supporting local groups to lead the work they know will make a difference.”

“When people feel connected, they feel supported. These grants give our community groups the tools they need to bring people together,” she added.
