Social Story supports inclusive visits to Benalla Library

23 May 2025

Benalla Library is proud to announce the introduction of a Social Story to help create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all community members.

The initiative is designed to reduce barriers to library access and participation. By offering a Social Story, we’re empowering our neurodiverse patrons and their families with tools to better prepare for their library visit.

This short, informative story uses accessible language and visuals to outline social situations, helping individuals navigate new environments with confidence and help reduce anxiety associated with unfamiliar settings.

Cr Bernie Hearn welcomed the new tool saying the stories provide detailed information about the library experience, such as how to travel to the library, what the building looks like, and the experience they may have at the library.

“Libraries are places of community connection and lifelong learning, and we want to ensure everyone feels safe and supported when they visit,” said Cr Hearn.

“A Social Story is a tool to support visitors by clearly explaining what they can expect during a library visit.”

“They can be really helpful for planning visits during quieter times, identifying suitable activities, and understanding how to behave in the library setting,” Cr Hearn said.

Visitors to the Benalla Library are encouraged to read the Social Story often and preferably two weeks in advance of their library visit.

For more information or to access the Social Story, visit www.benalla.vic.gov.au or phone the library on 03 5762 2069.
