The Benalla Festival: Your guide to rural events

28 October 2025

Weekend one of the Benalla Festival celebrates the charm, creativity, and community spirit of Benalla Rural City’s rural townships, offering unique experiences that invite visitors to ‘Live Local, Love Local’.

From vibrant markets to private gardens and unique art installations, there are plenty of experiences to enjoy across the region. Whether it’s sampling local produce, exploring historic sites, or meeting talented artists and producers, visitors can discover the richness of our rural communities while supporting local initiatives.

Deputy Mayor and Chair of the Benalla Festival Advisory Committee, Cr Justin King, said the first weekend highlights the diversity and warmth of the region’s villages.

“Our rural townships are full of character and creativity, and the festival is a wonderful opportunity for residents and visitors to discover what makes our rural townships so special,” Cr King said.

Visitors can enjoy Devenish’s popular country market, featuring a variety of stalls, delicious food, and coffee. A highlight of the market is the second annual inflatable animal costume race at 11am, an event everyone is welcome to join. On Saturday 8 November, the Benalla RSL will host a Remembrance Day service at Devenish Sportsground to honour the dedication of service men and women, followed by a morning tea.

Major Plains will host a rare public viewing of the privately commissioned silo art at Wanamara Farm, created by world-renowned artist Jimmy Dvate. Visitors can also meet Kelly the Wonder Dog, the subject of the artwork, with donations supporting the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal.

At Samaria Rose Farm in Moorngag, visitors can wander among 2,000 Damask rose bushes in full bloom, enjoy homemade scones, and explore the farm shop’s artisan rose products and festive gifts.

Tatong Market and More, features over 30 market sites set across the picturesque Tatong Valley. Visitors can enjoy entertainment from local buskers, sample delicious food and coffee, and explore a variety of stalls.

Swanpool rounds out the weekend with a family-friendly movie screening of Downton Abbey: Grand Finale, accompanied by tea, coffee, and scones.

Cr King encouraged everyone to plan a day trip through the region’s townships.

“There’s so much to see, taste, and experience across our rural communities. Weekend one of the Benalla Festival is a perfect way to explore our towns, meet local artists and producers, and enjoy a true sense of community.”

“The beauty of our rural landscapes and the passion of our local producers are central to the festival experience,” Cr King added.
