Benalla Rural City Council is taking a stand against gender-based violence by joining the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, running from 25 November to 10 December. This powerful initiative unites communities worldwide to call for an end to violence and highlights the vital role each of us plays in creating a safer, more supportive society.
Throughout the campaign, Benalla Rural City Council, in partnership with key organisations, will host a range of events and activities designed to raise awareness and provide practical tools for supporting those who may be experiencing violence. The full program of events is available from Council’s website.
Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn emphasised the importance of community involvement, saying, “Ending gender-based violence is something we all have a role in. By recognising the signs, responding with care, and referring people to the right support services, we can make a real difference in the lives of those affected.”
As part of the campaign, the Benalla Library will be illuminated in orange, the official colour of the 16 Days of Activism, symbolising a brighter future free from violence. This visual display serves as a reminder of the ongoing need to address and prevent gender-based violence in our community.
The campaign is supported by funding from the Victorian Government’s Free from Violence initiative, Respect Victoria, and Safe and Equal.
