Benalla Rural City Council delivered a strong year of infrastructure improvements in 2024/25, investing more than $6.27 million in capital works across the municipality.
From safer roads to upgraded footpaths and renewed public spaces, last year’s Capital Works Program focused on enhancing liveability, connectivity, and community wellbeing.
Key achievements included the completion of the Link Island Bridge renewal and the Webb Road culvert upgrade in Goomalibee, along with culvert upgrades at Racecourse Road and Gillies Street in Benalla. Council also completed its Kerb and Channel Replacement, Gravel Resheeting, Shoulder Resheeting, and Road Resealing programs.
Construction has commenced on the Midland Highway shared path to the Equestrian Precinct in North Benalla, while planning progressed for major projects such as the Benalla Indoor Recreation Centre and the Benalla Art Gallery Redevelopment.
Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn said these achievements reflect Council’s focus on delivering projects that make a difference to everyday life.
“These projects are about more than infrastructure – they’re about improving safety, access, and community connection,” Cr Hearn said.
Looking ahead, Council has secured funding for several new initiatives, including $2 million through the TAC Safe Local Roads Program, with planning already underway. Blackspot funding has also been allocated for intersection upgrades at Goorambat-Thoona Road and Bungeet Road, as well as pedestrian safety improvements along Bridge and Carrier Streets.
Other upcoming projects include drainage improvements at The Culdesac, installation of playground fencing at McKellar Street Reserve, and construction of a Pump Track (BMX). Lighting upgrades are also planned for Benalla Airport.
