Benalla Rural City Council welcomes Aboriginal Liaison Officer

12 December 2025

Benalla Rural City Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Jordyn Atkinson, a proud Yorta Yorta woman, as the new Aboriginal Liaison Officer, a role funded through the Benalla and District Social Inclusion Action Group (SIAG) by the Victorian Department of Health.

Jordyn’s role focuses on helping to ensure Aboriginal perspectives are included in Council decisions fostering collaboration and supporting First Nations community-based decision-making through SIAG. She will also provide advice on reconciliation and culturally appropriate training programs for Council staff, the community, and SIAG.

Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn warmly welcomed Jordyn to the team, saying, “Jordyn’s appointment is a significant step forward in strengthening our connection with the local Aboriginal community. Her role will help us continue to build meaningful partnerships and ensure that all voices are heard and respected in our decision-making processes.”

The Social Inclusion Action Group program takes a community-driven approach to foster connection and mental wellbeing. SIAG empowers locals to identify goals and co-create initiatives that enhance social inclusion. One of its key initiatives, the Social Connection Grants, launched in December 2023, supports local groups in organising events and activities that promote connection and inclusion.

Jordyn will act as the primary contact between Benalla Rural City Council, the local First Nations community, Elders, Registered Aboriginal Parties, and other First Nations committees and groups. She will also work to build partnerships with schools, health services, and Aboriginal Controlled Organisations, furthering the Council’s commitment to reconciliation and social inclusion.

The Benalla and District Social Inclusion Action Group, through flexible funding initiatives, will continue to deliver programs targeting First Nations peoples and the broader community, with Jordyn playing a key role in their success.

Aboriginal community members are encouraged to contact Jordyn with any suggestions for programs or initiatives that support the local Aboriginal community and promote social inclusion.
