Benalla Rural City has successfully concluded its 16 Days of Activism campaign, celebrating a series of impactful events that brought the community together to stand against family and domestic violence.
The campaign featured a variety of activities, including the highlight event, An Evening with Jelena Dokic, which drew over 300 attendees. Jelena’s powerful message, “Silence is violence,” resonated deeply, reminding everyone of the importance of being active bystanders in the fight against family violence.
Other events included:
- Unbreakable: The Jelena Dokic Story – A free cinema screening attended by more than 20 community members.
- Ice Creams and Colouring at Waminda – More than 20 children and young people participated in a colouring competition featuring artwork by Clinton Levy, while learning about respect and its importance at any age.
- Rotary Benalla Say No to Violence Walk and BBQ – More than 50 locals joined the Rotary Club of Benalla and local businesses to SAY NO to family and domestic violence.
- Coffee with a Cop at Waminda – Community members of all ages enjoyed a free coffee while chatting with local Police, Waminda staff, and Benalla Rural City Council Compliance team. This initiative aimed to break down barriers and foster a safe community where concerns about family violence can be shared.
Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn expressed her gratitude, saying, “It’s heartening to see our community come together to take a stand against family violence. These events remind us that respect and safety start with each of us, and together, we can create a stronger, safer community.”
The campaign was coordinated by Benalla Rural City Council and made possible through the support of Victoria Police, Waminda Community House, Rotary Benalla, Benalla Flexible Learning Centre, and the Centre Against Violence. Special thanks also go to Safe and Equal, Respect Victoria, and the Victorian Government’s Free from Violence funding for their support. Looking ahead, the Free from Violence program will offer free community training in 2026. For those interested, please get in touch at council@benalla.vic.gov.au or by calling 03 5760 2600.
