Community invited to shape safer roads, better paths and recreation spaces

19 January 2026

Benalla Rural City Council is calling on the community to have their say on three important strategies that will shape the future of the region.

A special community consultation event will be held on Wednesday 28 January, offering residents the opportunity to provide feedback on the Road Safety Strategy, Pathways to the Future – Active Transport Plan 2025–2030, and Recreation Reserve Master Plans.

The event will feature a pop-up session on Bridge Street near Piccadilly Laneway from 11am to 1pm, as well as information stalls in the Town Hall Foyer from 1pm to 4.30pm. Community members are encouraged to drop by, learn more about the projects, and share their ideas and experiences.

Mayor Bernie Hearn said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for our community to help shape the future of Benalla Rural City. We want to hear your thoughts on how we can make our roads safer, improve walking and cycling connections, and upgrade our recreation facilities to better meet your needs.”

The consultation will focus on three key areas:

  • Road Safety Strategy and Speed Management Plan – Aiming to reduce road trauma and improve safety through community-informed, data-driven strategies. Feedback is sought on unsafe roads, speed limits, and ideas for improving safety for vulnerable users.
  • Pathways to the Future – Active Transport Plan 2025–2030 – Focused on improving walking, cycling, and small transport options. Community input is needed on barriers to active transport (walking, running, cycling), priority routes, and pedestrian safety including safer crossings.
  • Recreation Reserve Master Plans – Designed to upgrade ageing infrastructure at four major recreation reserves. Residents are invited to share their thoughts on facility upgrades, inclusivity, and investment priorities.

“Your input is invaluable in ensuring these strategies reflect the needs and aspirations of our community. Together, we can create a safer, more connected, and inclusive Benalla Rural City,” Cr Hearn added.
